Personality:Mathias is a passionate person, but his passions are few. Most topics he treats with a surprising level of disinterest, bordering on anti social. But those he does regard with interest, he throws himself at them with an equally surprising level of devotion. Above all things though, he is judgemental of others. That isn't to say he's an insufferable ass at all times, though he could act as such from time to time. Instead, he puts up a facade of a happy, up-beat individual, as to not alienate those he works with.
For starters, his largest passion, would be his work. Now thats not to say his work specifically as a member of squad 12, but more specifically anything he was tasked to do. And even then, it lies more specifically in the intellectual realm, that he finds passion for his work. If he were asked to dispatch hollow, while he'd do so as was his duty, he would find such a task cumbersome or tedious, and gripe about it before or afterwards. Even some tasks such as lifting heavy objects, he'd much rather see delegated to someone else or below him.
Other passions of his involve contemplating new inventions, or fields he's yet to study, or engaging in a debate with someone of similar wit as himself(often times preferring to take the devil's advocate position in these discussions). However, things he finds not tolerable would be people that seemingly inconvenience others purposefully. He also detests indecisiveness and those who are slow to make their decisions. That isn't to say he prefers hot-blooded 'leap before you look' actions, he hates those just as much. Rather, he prefers that people have thought things through before actually taking them into account.

History:Mathias was, in life, a Norwegian fisherman of little importance. He had a modest income, a caring family. The son of a fisherman before him, he grew up learning the way of the sea, and how to work the riggings of a fishing boat. Life was looking up for him, of course, up until -that- night. While sailing at sea, his small fishing boat was caught in a storm as he was heading for shore. And unfortunately, his boat was smashed into the side of some rocks along a craggy shoreline.
After his passing, several years later, people would invent ghost stories about him, and eventually, as the spot of his death grew more famous for some strange reason (we'll say they made killer corn dogs) his descendants grew tired of tourists coming to their ancestor's resting place. So they put together some strange seaweed monster outfits and tried to scare away the tourists. And it was working too, and they might have gotten away with it if 4 groovy teens and their talking dog didn't happen along, and solve the mystery.
But this story isn't about Mathias' descendants, or even those groovy teens. No, not the killer corn dogs either. This is about Mathias himself. What-? He's dead already? Hush! I'm getting to that part, now stop interrupting me. Where was I... oh right, Mathias was dead. Well, as we all know, people that die materialize due to some wizard in the sky, in a place called Soul Society. Mathias, happened to materialize in a not-so-well-to-do neighborhood. Yes in the Rukon districts of the soul society. Now- what district was it you ask? Uhm... well, er... lets say northern 34th district. Now will you leave an old man be? Thanks, where was I? Oh yes the space invaders! As they beamed down with their laz- what? Oh Mathias... I knew that... I was testing you.
Anyways, Mathias spent his time as a citizen of the rukon district doin poor people things, like working part time jobs with local vendors- no they didn't have corn dogs. But he quickly realized this wasn't enough for him. He didn't know anything of his life before arriving in soul society. And infact, if he did, he'd see he was almost a completely different person. Not by looks, but by ambitions. He suddenly wanted to create, think, study, be all the things one wasn't as a fisherman.
He eventually got it into his head that the best way to do this would become a shinigami, where he could make more money, live in a not-so-dirty area, and invent things. Why did he think this? Because magic. Moving along, he entered into the academy, passing the entrance exam on the first try. He apparently scraped by, getting the bare minimum score required to be eligible for the first class. But that wasn't to say he was incapable, or maybe it was to say that. That much would require the future be known to see just how far he'd go. In the mean time, he went through his studies, doing the best he could, and putting his effort into it. He wasn't going to accept anything less than a passing grade in that academy.
And low and behold, his effort paid off, when at the end of his 6 year stay, he graduated. He joined squad 12, as it was apparently the one devoted to research and development and seemed the most up his ally.
